A walk back in time

In the afternoon, we were off to Pompeii. This was the town which was buried by volcanic ash in 79 AD. It was a Roman business town of about 22000 people, almost 60% of the city perished in 40 feet of ash. The town had existed for about 700 years before being buried. It was incredible to see how advanced their civilization was!
The Roman theatre.
This was the change room of the spa, note the cubbies above the bench....for their belongings, maybe togas?!!
This was the detail on the ceiling of the spa...there were steam rooms, hot baths and cold water baths to close the pores.
This is the symbol carved into the stone showing the direction to the brothel...yes, it really is what you think it looks like!

This was one of the beds in the brothel...not very comfy.
The ruins cover an area of 170 acres!
Difficult to see, this was one of many of the bodies found, in this case a dog, once the ashes are removed, plaster is pored in around the bones (which have been preserved by ash), leaving the exact imprint of the body. Kinda sad.
A small glimpse into many of the objects that have been recovered. Amazing!
We had an authentic Italian lunch today with margarita pizza and pasta. Yum!
Truckload of lemons...lots of lemonade!
