Mount Versuvius in the background.
The isle of Capri.
We walked around some of the city, then went to the Archiological Museum. It was fascinating, there were many statues of both Greek and Roman origin, dating back 2000 years.
Julius Caesar and some of his fearless warriors!
These were gorgeous mosaics taken from the floors of homes in Pompeii. They were made up of thousands of tiny rocks, simply stunning!
These are some of the medical instruments found after they excavated Pompeii in the late 1700s. Pompeii was buried by volcanic ash in 79 AD. They are in remarkably good shape, and surprisingly similar to those still used today by doctors and dentists!
These were bottles still intact that had melted from the heat!
Next we went underground to explore the aqueducts built by the Greeks and Romans beginning around 0 AD. The fresh water came from a river 70 miles away. They used these to provide water for the city up until 1884, then used them as bomb shelters during the war. It was fascinating, and by times, a bit scary as we walked through very narrow tunnels underground by candle light.
